Embattled by environmental injustice, Mount Vernon, a city where 62 percent of its 68,000 residents are black compared to Westchester County’s 17 percent, finds itself at the forefront of a pressing crisis. Nestled just a half-hour drive north of Manhattan, this majority-black suburb of New York City has long faced a noxious infrastructure ordeal. Decades of neglect have led to sewage overflows into thousands of homes, creating an urgent and persistent problem. However, a glimmer of hope emerges as efforts to address this longstanding issue are finally gaining momentum, offering a ray of relief to the community.
